Unissued Vietnam War Era Wet Weather Overalls Size: Small

This is a very unique find!

This is a set of Vietnam War issue wet weather overalls in a size Small. They are in unissued, NOS condition!

The overalls are oversized and can be easily worn by a men's size Medium.

These are the heavy canvas type overalls that were paired with the canvas pullover parka made famous by its frequent use in the movie "Platoon". This wet weather set was replaced in the late 1960's with a parka and overalls made of polyurethane coated nylon.

Wet weather overalls were not frequently worn while in the bush for the simple reason that they were not convenient to put on and take off quickly while on patrol or in combat. The overalls were, however, popular on firebase duty, especially during the monsoons, where the time required to put them on and off was not important and they provided protection from the elements and mud.

Keep in mind that these overalls are not 100% waterproof. Before the days of Gore-Tex, waterproof garments for combat were a complicated endeavor. Waterproof items made of rubberized cotton or canvas had been around for a very long time. But these articles were far too heavy to wear in combat conditions and in the tropics they presented a bigger problem than the rain due to trapped heat and sweat. These canvas type parkas and overalls were considered a better solution. The tight weave of the material made them water resistant but breathable. The material will absorb the water, but interestingly as it gets soaked the material starts to shed water. The seams were sealed with a type of rubber cement and a tape to keep water from permeating the seams. The wearer will get damp in a heavy rainstorm, but he will not get soaked.
