This is a Vietnam issue, third pattern, ripstop jungle fatigue jacket. The size label is a Medium/Long, but the jacket sleeves were altered to a much shorter length. Please see the measurements below. It is in used, good condition. There is a 1" repair in the upper left sleeve. The jacket is faded for the classic OG-107 look. It is dated 1969.
The iconic Vietnam War jungle fatigue was one of the most favored and beloved uniforms in U.S. Military history! They were modeled after the M-42 paratrooper uniforms, which were, themselves, ahead of their time in terms of their design and utility. Entering into the Vietnam War, the U.S. Military heavyweight cotton twill uniforms were inadequate for jungle warfare. They were designed for temperate American and European climates, and the thick cotton was too hot and too slow to dry. Starting in the early 1960's, the military tested various tropical uniform designs, most featuring a lightweight, wind resistant cotton poplin. The early model jungle fatigues proved to be highly successful and popular among U.S. Special Forces and the various advisors in-country. They were rugged enough for the harsh conditions, but lightweight, quick drying and well ventilated. After some successive and minor design changes, the final jungle fatigue pattern incorporated the innovative rip-stop weave designed to prevent rips, holes and snags from growing. This pattern (of which this jacket is an example) is referred to alternately as the third pattern (rip-stop) or the fourth pattern jungle fatigue.
OG-107 jungle fatigues soldiered on until 1990 when OD uniforms were no longer authorized for wear in U.S. Military service. They were highly popular in the 1970's and 1980's. Jungle fatigues were issued in quantity in the mid-1980's due to the unsuitability of the early BDU's in hot weather. They remained in use until 1987 when they were replaced by the 100% cotton BDU variants.
