This is an M-65 field jacket liner in size X-Large. It is in used, excellent condition. The quilting is still tight and there are no frayed areas or burn holes. This is a unique liner in that it was manufactured in the early 2000's and it has a sage green color to it as opposed to the light olive green color in which these liners were commonly produced.
This is the last version of the jacket. It features buttons on the front which allows it to be worn as a light jacket by itself.
The field jacket liner, or the "smoking jacket", as it was popularly called, is another highly functional item of military clothing. Originally they were strictly intended to be a liner for the M-65 model field jacket and they lacked buttons on the front for use as a separate undergarment. During and after Vietnam, it was very popular to convert poncho liners into lightweight jackets. Those jackets were often used as liners for wet weather parkas and that combination was extremely popular for soldiers stationed in Germany during the cold and damp months. Since the field jacket liner is essentially the same material as the poncho liner, the U.S. Military caught on to the potential of the field jacket liner and started adding front buttons to them for use as a general purpose cold weather layer.
These liners were extremely popular long after the field jacket ceased to be in common use. The field jacket liner is extremely lightweight and can pack nicely into a rucksack. They were often worn as a light undergarment under a DCU or ACU jacket during cold nights in the mountains of Afghanistan.
The intended role of the field jacket liner shouldn't be overlooked! In order to make a field jacket into a true, layered cold weather garment, these liners are a must have. They provide an excellent, lightweight insulating barrier that will trap body heat and block the wind.
